Global Movement of Moderates
I first proposed the idea for the movement in my maiden speech at the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2010. I urged governments, religious leaders, intellectuals and business leaders across the world to take a united stand against extremism in all its forms, saying that “it is time for moderates of all countries, of all religions to take back the centre, to reclaim the agenda for peace and pragmatism, and to marginalise the extremists.”
I have since been promoting the agenda at both local and international forums, most recently delivering a keynote address at the inaugural International Conference on the Global Movement of Moderates (ICGMM).
The Global Movement of Moderates has been praised by world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
